ABSTRACT
At the end of World War 2 four revolutionary technologies burst upon the world together: space travel, nuclear energy, genomics and computing. Each triggered social and economic repercussions that still resonate with us today. Freeman Dyson began his scientific career just at that time, and was not only present at the creation of all of these transforming technologies, he made significant contributions too. Some of them succeeded and some failed. With a front row seat of history in the making and the wisdom of a lifetime at the forefront of science, Dyson has unique insights into the reasons behind those successes and failures.
BIO
Freeman J. Dyson helped shape our world through his profound contributions to science and technology, and his visionary ideas for human destiny. His seminal papers on quantum electrodynamics have had a lasting influence on many branches of modern physics. He has also made significant contributions in diverse fields including nuclear engineering, climate studies and the origin of life. Dyson is known for his bold, futuristic and sometimes controversial ideas about topics ranging from spacecraft propulsion, alien astro-engineering, space colonization and genomic engineering to human destiny and the ultimate fate of the cosmos. He is currently retired from the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he was a Professor of Physics for many decades.
