Here, we'll explore the profound question of reality and how scientific discoveries have peeled away layers of our understanding, revealing a world far stranger than we ever imagined. From Newtonian physics to quantum mechanics, we'll delve into phenomena like wave-particle duality and quantum entanglement, which challenge our intuitive notions of space, time, and matter. We’ll explore how each breakthrough brings us closer to understanding the true nature of reality yet simultaneously unveils new mysteries that assault our common sense. But perhaps we’ll see if John Lennon was ultimately correct – perhaps “Nothing is real” after all.

The “Thinking Beyond” webinar series features renowned physicists Paul Davies, Sara Walker and Maulik Parikh from the Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science at Arizona State University and addresses big questions/topics in science. This month, Geraint F. Lewis will present the topic and will be joined by Paul Davies and Maulik Parikh.

Geraint F. Lewis is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Sydney. As a cosmologist, Geraint explores the dark side of the universe, the dark matter and energy that has shaped the evolution of the cosmos, focusing on gravitational lensing, galactic cannibalism and large-scale surveys of the cosmos. As well as more than 500 peer-reviewed articles, he has authored four books on cosmology, including “Where did the Universe come from?” and “The Cosmic Revolutionary’s Handbook”. His new book, “The Shortest History of Reality” will be published in 2025.
